Cycle tourism has been growing in popularity over the past few years. It's an activity that's both economical and ecological, and that can be practiced solo, as a family, with friends and in a group. There are clubs for every type of cycling. You don't have to be great athlete to practice this sport - anyone can ride a bike regardless of their physical condition. The important thing is to cycle at your own pace.
If you would like to try a cycling vacation, there are a variety of itineraries to choose from. You might like to bike n' camp in a national park, do some exotic cycling in Corsica or test your stamina in the Rockies. You might also consider cycling in the lower St. Lawrence region and into New Brunswick, or even touring in Provence!
More and more travel agencies are offering cycle tourism packages, but there's nothing to stop you from creating your own adventure and cycling solo. Whatever you decide, there are a few essentials you need to take with you:
- Flat repair kit (with a spare tube)
- Pump
- Saddle bags (knapsacks are not recommended)
- A good helmet
- Sun glasses and sun screen
- A full bottle of water (drinking a half litre of water per hour is recommended even when it's not hot)
- Travel Insurance (especially if you are planning to go abroad)
- First Aid Kit (for the little scrapes and bruises)
- Accident Insurance (for the bigger ones.)
Whether you are vacationing or simply going on a one-hour bike ride in the city, cycling is a great way to visit and experience places differently. So, when you start to plan your vacation, why fret over the price of gas? Consider ecotourism instead!
