How do you define health and well-being? How can you protect your physical, mental and financial health? What are the main causes of stress? What is presenteism?
You will find the answer to these and many other questions in the "Health is Cool!" booklet, which you can download free of charge. The booklet also offers a ton of useful information, advice and even a fun game. It was published following the third edition of the Desjardins Financial Security Health Survey.
Here's a preview of some of the 2006 Desjardins Financial Security Health Survey findings:
Did you know that...
-
51% of Canadians know someone who is or has been touched by a mental illness, or are affected by it personally.
-
In the past two years, 21% of all workers have experienced physical health problems caused by stress, anxiety or depression.
-
62% or workers who suffered from physical problems caused by stress, anxiety or depression tried their best to maintain their usual work schedule. However, when outside of work, most (59%) could not keep up their usual pace and needed more rest.
-
Close to four in 10 workers (37%) who reported experiencing physical problems, but did not take time off work, said they continued to work because they need the income. This behaviour is known as "presenteism".
-
Technology, which allows employers to reach employees at any time of the day or night, has either increased or maintained stress levels for 83% of workers!
-
Money is the main cause of stress outside work. It is also the main reason why many workers are reluctant to take the necessary time off to recover from health issues, since any extended time off work could cause a disruption in pay.
