Main Features
 

• The annuity certain pays the annuitant a fixed annuity for a set term.
   
• There is no minimum-age restriction for taking out this type of annuity. However, the annuitant's age, current interest rates, and the length of the contract are important criteria that are used to establish an annuity certain and will determine the payment amount.
   
• Annuities certain can be taken out using non-registered funds for periods of between 5 and 10 years or 15 years, or until age 90. An annuity certain that is purchased with funds from an RRSP or RRIF must be paid to age 90. Lastly, locked-in funds such as funds from a LIRA, LIF or locked-in RRSP cannot be used to purchase an annuity certain.
   
• Annuitants can choose a prescribed or non-prescribed annuity. A prescribed annuity provides tax savings  under certain conditions.
   
• An annuity certain can be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually.
