Why purchase Travel Insurance?

Travel Insurance offers a large choice of coverage options in the event of illness or injury while travelling outside Canada.

The Emergency Health Care coverage reimburses up to $5 million in emergency expenses incurred for hospitalization, the services of a physician, surgeon, private nurse, chiropractor, podiatrist or physiotherapist. It also covers various other healthcare services such as laboratory tests, X-rays and prescription drugs.

Transportation to hospital or back to the insured's home, or repatriation from abroad with or without a medical attendant, are some of the other services Travel Insurance can offer. In addition, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, baggage insurance and cancellation insurance are also offered. Cancellation insurance is particularly useful if unforeseen circumstances force the cancellation or interruption of a trip.

Eligibility

Travel Insurance is offered to all Canadian residents who are covered under a provincial health insurance program. However, applicants aged 55 or over must complete a questionnaire to determine eligibility for coverage and the premium rate.

Limitation and exclusions

The Travel Insurance policy contains a table of limitations for pre-existing medical conditions and exclusions for each coverage

A pre-existing medical condition is a health problem that, before the effective date of coverage, required the applicant to consult a physician, be admitted to hospital, receive treatment or take medication, or be advised to do so by a physician.

Travel assistance service

A travel assistance service accompanies the insured 24/7 throughout the trip. Service coordinators are available around the clock to assist in hospital admission in the event of an emergency, or repatriation, if health permits. They can also help replace lost or stolen tickets or identification required to continue the trip.

Before departure, service coordinators can provide information about passports, visas or vaccinations required in the country of destination. If necessary, they can help travellers in case of language barriers.
