Soaring Health Care Costs

The rise in group insurance costs stems mainly from the constant increases in the cost of health care, particularly that of prescription drugs.

Over the past few years, the cost of prescription drugs has gone up by 15% to 20% each year. These increases are attributable to an increased use of prescription drugs, due to our aging population, and to the arrival on the market of new, more expensive drugs. Furthermore, the use of patented drugs rather than generic drugs also has an impact on increasing these costs.

Such increases have a major impact on group insurance plans. Prescription drugs now account for more than 16% of health care costs and correspond to roughly 75% of the amount paid in health care claims. Moreover, it has been predicted that these costs will rise again by 200% to 300% before 2010.
